In Kazakhstan, the republican action "Bir el - bir kitap" has been held since 2007 at the initiative of the National Academic Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Association of Librarians of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The purpose of the action is to read the best works of national literature, promote educational affairs, preserve the spiritual heritage, as well as educate young people in the spirit of patriotism and morality. In addition, the action contributes to the further increase of public interest in Russian literature, including the classics, modern literature and poetry.

In 2020, by the decision of the jury of the Republican action "One country - one book", the works of an outstanding Kazakh writer, public figure, scientist, doctor of philological sciences, professor, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan (1946), honored worker of science were recognized as the main books of the year for general reading in Kazakhstan Mukhtar Omarkhanovich Auezov "The Way of Abai" (to the 175th anniversary of Abay Kunanbayev) and Kazakh writer, famous publicist, public figure Anuar Alimzhanov "Return of the Teacher" (to the 1150th anniversary of Abu Nasyr al-Farabi).
