Student self-governance in action: first-year METU students organized a press conference

The year 2025 has been declared the Year of Student Self-Governance at METU, with the main goal of providing students with greater opportunities to independently organize educational and scientific initiatives. One such event was the press conference «Scientific Discoveries and Ethics», held by first-year students of the RET group during a Russian language class in the Department of «Social and humanitarian disciplines and world languages».

The students took the initiative to plan and conduct the event independently, assuming the roles of organizers, moderators, and speakers. During the discussion, participants explored topics such as scientists’ responsibility, the moral aspects of technological progress, and the impact of innovations on society. Special attention was given to bioethics, artificial intelligence, and environmental challenges.

The press conference not only served as a platform for discussing relevant scientific issues but also became a vivid example of successful student self-governance. Thanks to the initiative of Sagatbek Meirambek, Erzhanqyzy Ayaulym, Abdirova Dilnaz, Agatdzhan Akbota, Kasymova Mayra, Zharasov Zhansen, and their classmates, the event was highly organized and demonstrated great intellectual depth.

The students received support from university professors – PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Zhanyl Aubakirovna Tukebayeva, and PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor Anar Sisenbayeva Sisenbayeva. They highlighted not only the relevance of the topics discussed but also the students’ active engagement in the educational process, their enthusiasm for learning, and their ability to independently manage academic initiatives.

The Year of Student Self-Governance at METU is not just a slogan but a real opportunity for students to prove themselves as leaders, organizers, and responsible professionals of the future. The first-year students’ press conference became yet another step in this direction, demonstrating that student activity plays a key role in university life.
