The First Student Construction Brigade Established at the International Engineering and Technology University

The International Engineering and Technology University (METU) has launched its very first student construction brigade. This initiative is aimed at engaging young people in labor activities, helping them gain practical experience, and fostering a spirit of teamwork.

The project is being implemented as part of the 2025 Year of Working Professions and the Year of Student Self-Governance at METU, both announced by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. It represents an important step toward increasing interest in technical and vocational education, while also supporting the development of student-led initiatives within the university. Through this effort, students will have the opportunity to work in real production environments and gain valuable hands-on experience.

The history of student construction brigades dates back to 1959. In Kazakhstan, the movement gained momentum in the 1960s, with one of the first brigades being established in 1963 at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Brigade members worked not only across various regions of Kazakhstan but also abroad, gaining important experience. Special recognition should be given to Bakytzhan Tursynovich Zhumagulov — a veteran of student construction brigades, a prominent figure in education, and Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2010–2013) — for his contributions in supporting and promoting this tradition.

Today, this valuable tradition is being revived at METU. During the summer period, students will work on socially significant projects and develop practical skills. This initiative is not only a platform for professional development but also a step toward fostering civic responsibility and a strong work ethic among young people.

METU students have welcomed the initiative with great enthusiasm. According to them, this marks an important first step in their professional lives and offers a meaningful opportunity to grow as future specialists. The METU administration plans to make the project permanent, expand the number of student brigades, and broaden the scope of their work. This initiative stands as a shining example of the harmonious integration of education and labor.
