On April 24, 2026, the International Engineering and
Technological University (METU) participated in an international roundtable in
Almaty, hosted by ALT University. The event brought together representatives
from the Malaysian higher education system and leading universities of
Kazakhstan, supported by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) — the
national agency responsible for promoting Malaysian higher education globally.
METU was represented at the roundtable by Karlygash
Shokhayeva, Director of the International Cooperation Department. As part of
the official program, the university presented its educational and research
capabilities, as well as promising areas for international collaboration.
The event featured representatives from prestigious
Malaysian institutions, including Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti
Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM),
Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), and the Malaysian Qualifications
Agency (MQA).
Following the negotiations, METU reached agreements to
develop partnerships with several Malaysian universities. Notably, cooperation
was established with two of Asia’s strongest institutions: Universiti Putra
Malaysia (UPM), ranked 134th in the QS World University Rankings, and
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), ranked 153rd.
The key areas of collaboration will include academic
mobility for students and faculty, the implementation of joint educational
programs (including double-degree programs), invitations for visiting
professors, scientific internships, joint research projects, and the
establishment of international laboratories.
Participation in this high-level international event
marks a significant milestone in METU’s internationalization strategy,
confirming the university’s growing prestige on the global educational stage.
These new partnerships with Malaysian universities will provide METU students
and faculty with expanded opportunities for learning, scientific exchange, and
professional growth.
