METU Announces the Winners of the "Science-to-Business: Innovation Breakthrough" Startup Competition

On 9 July 2026, the International Engineering and Technological University (METU) held the award ceremony for the winners of the "Science-to-Business: Innovation Breakthrough" Startup Competition, organized as part of the University`s Science Decade.

Promoting innovation-driven entrepreneurship, commercializing research outcomes, and creating opportunities for young people to transform their ideas into successful ventures are among the key priorities of Kazakhstan`s science and higher education policy. The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan has repeatedly emphasized the importance of converting scientific research into market-oriented technologies and competitive products that contribute to the country`s economic growth and sustainable development.

In line with these national priorities, METU is actively developing an innovation ecosystem that encourages technological entrepreneurship and enables students to transform innovative ideas into viable startup projects.

This year, the competition attracted more than 40 startup applications, of which 23 projects were selected to advance to the final stage and present their ideas before the competition committee. Participants showcased innovative solutions in digital technologies, biotechnology, engineering, tourism, and other fields, demonstrating a high level of professional preparation and strong practical relevance.

The winners of the competition were:

First Place - "InvestLab", developed by Aqzharqyn Nurmanova, a doctoral student of the Department of Food Engineering and Technology, enrolled in the Food Production Technology and Engineering program.

Second Place - "Metachiken Diagnostics", developed by Alfiya Tugeyeva, a student of the Department of Biochemical Engineering, enrolled in the Biotechnology program.

Third Place - "Legends of Kazakhstan", developed by Abay Otarbayev, a student of the Department of Economics and Business, enrolled in the Tourism program.

The winners were awarded diplomas and cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding achievements. In addition, the best startup projects will receive further support through the university`s innovation ecosystem and commercialization initiatives aimed at bringing promising research-based technologies to the market.
