Legal Support for International Students: METU Hosts a Meeting with a Representative of Almaty’s Migration Service

On 15 October 2026, the Department of International Cooperation at the International Engineering and Technological University (METU) organised a meeting between international students and Police Captain Nurlan Bisenov, Senior Inspector of the Migration Service Directorate of the Almaty Police Department. The event brought together students from various countries who have chosen METU for their higher education.

The meeting was organised to promote the principle of “Law and Order” and strengthen international students’ legal awareness. President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasises the importance of compliance with the law and the development of a culture of respect for the law, with particular attention to legal education in educational institutions.

Understanding migration requirements is an important part of international students’ adjustment to life in Kazakhstan. The meeting therefore focused on practical issues that arise during their studies and stay in the country, offering an opportunity to receive clarification directly from a migration service representative.

A question-and-answer session formed the central part of the event. Students actively participated in the discussion, raised migration-related questions and sought clarification on matters of particular concern to them. Nurlan Bisenov responded to participants’ enquiries and explained issues relating to compliance with migration requirements.

The open dialogue gave the meeting practical value, as the discussion was shaped by international students’ actual questions and needs. Direct access to a specialist enabled participants to obtain relevant information and better understand the steps to take in situations affecting them.

Such meetings encourage a responsible approach to legal compliance and strengthen cooperation between the university, international students and public authorities. For students pursuing their education far from home, access to advice and clear explanations is especially important, helping them navigate an unfamiliar legal and social environment with greater confidence.

METU’s Department of International Cooperation expresses its gratitude to Nurlan Bisenov for participating in the meeting and providing informative answers to students’ questions. Legal awareness, respect for the laws of the host country and support for international students remain important elements of the university’s welcoming international learning environment.
